Lindsey Gardiner - Profile
I have a WASPS studio at Meadowmill in Dundee which I share with my high-maintenance but lovable dogs, Lola and Yuki. I pretty much spend most of my life there apart from one day a week when I teach textiles at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.
After graduating in Printed Textiles in 1996, I went on to do my MA at Winchester School of Art. I had always specialised in the children’s market but was constantly experimenting with different disciplines. I tried my hand at writing and illustrating a children’s book and have never looked back!
Since my first book “Here come Poppy and Max” was published in 2000, I have had lots of books published in many different languages all over the world. I also went on to write and illustrate stories for a Japanese children’s magazine over a couple of years.
Although I write my own books, I also illustrate other people’s stories which has been a successful venture for me. My book “Doing the Animal Bop”, written by Jan Ormerod, was short listed for the “Early Years Awards” and my book “Who Wants a Dragon” by James Mayhew was short listed for The Sheffield Book Prize.
I recently had a book published by “Star Bright Books”, one of my New York Publishers, called “Trosclair and the Alligator”. This is an unusual book set in the Louisiana Bayou and is written by a poet from Alabama called Peter Huggins.
My original characters from the “Poppy and Max” series are growing up slightly and progressing to an older format of book for school children in a series of eight first readers for Orchard Books. Along with these, I am also working on a couple of new picture books for OUP and Random House Children’s Books.
In between this busy schedule, I try to fit in some “grown up” drawing and painting which is having an increasing influence on the style of my books.
